File this one under "It's about time!":
According to this article, greeting card giant Hallmark will debut a set of cards designed for those moments where a person needs a greeting card, but the normal messages won't work.
Hallmark's "Journeys" line will include cards for people going through chemotherapy, dealing with depression, or facing the sudden loss of a loved one. And...(drumroll)...two of the cards will deal with a person's coming out! According to the article, the cards do not specifically mention sexual orientation, but one has the message "Be You," accompanied by a rainbow.
This is a welcome change, since cards that have dealt specifically with events like coming out or more sensitive issues have largely been absent from shelves. More specifically, designers of cards dealing with gay issues often feel the need to include a nude model or something campy. While there is nothing wrong with that type of content, there are times where something more serious and poetic is needed. Plus, there is the issue that one has to find a gay-friendly store or go online to purchase the card, and that is not always practical.
Hopefully, any store that carries Hallmark will also carry the full line of Journeys cards, and this will enable people everywhere to find that card for that special occasion.
My challenge to Hallmark is that now that they have entered this market, let's see some cards that address same-sex relationships. I am one of the people who has had to sort through too many "To My Husband, From Your Loving Wife," cards to find the one card that contains language that is neutral and which doesn't sound trite. A card that simply says "To My Partner," or the like is not too much to ask.
Let's get behind this and support Hallmark in taking this bold step forward!
