Today is Memorial Day--a day our country set aside to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation during wartime. It is always important to remember that our very nation's independence depended upon fighting for our freedom. It is also important to remember that freedom is an ongoing process, and that the quest for freedom will never quite be completed.
Whatever you feel about our current situations in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is always important to remember that over 3000 American servicepeople have given their lives. Despite our government's attempts to censor coverage of these dead, they are no less worthy of honor on this day. In fact, it is especially important that we remember them and honor their memory by ensuring that wars are never started again on false pretenses.
Today, as you are going throughout your planned activities, remember the many war dead who came before us, as well as the ongoing conflicts elsewhere in the world. May the men and women of our Armed Forces be able to come home soon, and may we learn to solve differences by working together and talking. That is truly honoring the memory of our war dead.
