The So You Think You Can Dance Update is back for Season 6!
The show had a bumpy start this season, what with it bumping up against the World Series.
The result was that America did not get its chance to vote until the Top 16 level.

On November 12, 2009, the Charter for Compassion will be unveiled to the world at large.

The Charter is the result of a year of discussion, friendly debate, and careful consideration of the one core concept all religions and cultures have in common: the Golden Rule.

Far from a religious document--which often leads to more division, the Charter is designed to unite us all and remind us of what is most important: treating others as we wish to be treated.

I am in the process of planning some kind of event to mark the unveiling of the Charter. Once I know what this event will be, I will announce it on the blog. America has spoken, and after nearly 100 million votes, Kris Allen won in what has been the biggest upset in the history of American Idol.

Despite warnings that the show would run over, the show actually ran on time, and featured performances by the Top 13 contestants, along with established artists like KISS, Black Eyed Peas, Queen Latifah, Queen, Cyndi Lauper, Rod Stewart, and of course 2008 American Idol winner David Cook.

Adding to the fun for the night, Ryan handed out the brand new "Golden Idol Awards," to commemorate some of the more memorable auditions and performers:

Outstanding Male went to Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentile, who once again entertained us all with his rendition of "And I Am Telling You."

Best Attitude went to Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell, who showed up with newly augumented breasts, kissed Ryan, and got her chance to sing "Vision of Love," and was unexpectedly joined on stage by judge Kara DioGuardi, who at the end of the song ripped open her dress to reveal her own black bikini (and one helluva body!)

Outstanding Female went to contestant Tatiyana Nicole del Toro, who was cut in the wild card round. Despite Ryan's insistance that she remain in the audience and claim her trophy during the commercial, she still came up on stage, sang an acapella verson of "Saving All My Love For You," amid several attempts to take her off the stage. She kept escaping the guards, and was finally silenced when the band played the "commercial break" bumper and then cut to the commercial.

After nearly 100 million votes, and a record-breaking 264 million votes for the entire season, Kris came from being the underdog to the new American Idol. He was truly shocked, and actually thought Adam should have won. Still, he took his unexpected victory in stride, and sang his new single (which, thankfully, had been redone to save his voice) on the stage.

Congratulations, Kris! It couldn't have happened to a nicer, more humble guy!

It's the first half of the finale for Season 8 of American Idol, pitting Adam and Kris against each other.

As usual, Tom and I discuss the performances, our predictions for who we think will win, and we give a final critique of Season 8 in general with our "Good, Bad, and Ugly" nominations.

The show opened with a sketch featuring the cast of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Ben Stiller announces that Ryan has been injured in a "bikini waxing incident," and that he would introduce the show. The rest of the cast of Night joined Ben in announcing that the original American Idol desk will be added to the Smithsonian's collection.

The show opens in the usual way, and Ryan announces that 88 million votes were phoned and texted in.

There was no group number, due to the time spent at the "Hometown Heroes" events.

The Ford commercial featured the Top 3 signing "Break My Stride," and animated as comic book superheroes. One of the better ones this season.

Ryan announces that as a followup to Carrie Underwood's Idol Gives Back experience, R&B singer Alicia Keys has come to the show with a special announcement. Alicia is the Global Ambassador for the charitable organization Keep a Child Alive. Alicia introduces emerging artist Noah from Rwanda who is pursuing a dream of making an album of music that will raise funds to save children from HIV/AIDS.

Noah sings "I Am the World's Greatest," which he had learned in English just one week ago. Incredible!

After Noah's performance, Alicia announces that texting "Alive" to 90999 will donate $5 to the organization she represents, and charge $5 to a person's cellular phone bill.

Ryan begins the buildup to the results by calling Danny Gokey to the stage.

Danny's Homecoming video montage plays. Danny has the opportunity to reunite with Jamar, his friend who had auditioned along with him, but who ended up being cut in the final stage of Hollywood week. Despite the time away from each other, the bromance is still alive and well.

After the video, Ryan recaps the songs Danny performed and the judges' comments. Danny is sent to the couch to relax, but no results have been announced yet.

Kris Allen is then called to the stage.

Kris' Homecoming video montage plays. Kris has a big family that obviously has a lot of love to share. His father has a hard time keeping in his emotions (you go, Dad!).

After the video, Ryan recaps the songs Kris performed and the judges' comments. Kris is also sent to the couch to relax, and still no results have been revealed.

Jordin Sparks, the winner of American Idol Season 6, performs her new single "Battlefield." Great song;  a'ight performance. I'm still glad she--not Blake--won, though.

Ryan calls Adam to the stage. Adam had a "streaker" interrupt one of his performances, and he thought it was bizarre.

Adam's Homecoming video footage plays. He has probably the most unique homecoming, even performing at a Marine base (I'll skip the obvious "...looking for a few good men," jokes...). Adam's public persona is confident, and much more humble than one would think. He is actually overwhelmed by all the attention at one point.

After Adam's video, Ryan recaps his songs and the judges' comments.

After the commercial, things are obviously not ready on the main stage, because Ryan is talking with the contestants to stall for some time. Danny says he just wants to know the results, because the suspense is killing him. Ryan jokes that he has no control over the amount of delay.

Once things are ready, Ryan introduces Katy Perry, who sings her new single "Waking Up in Vegas." Katy has Adam's name embroidered on the back of her Elvis-inspired costume. The song is plenty bizarre, but not unexpected from Katy.

Ryan has the Top Three in center stage, ready to hear the results.

Adam is in the finale.

This means that



Danny Gokey

has been eliminated.

Despite this, I believe that Danny will most likely be signed, and given that he has finally broken through some of the walls that seemed to keep him from emerging as an artist, he will likely do very well. Just don't let him dance without some coaching. Maybe if Paula's contract isn't renewed, she will have a ready client...

Next week is the finale, and we will see who America chooses as its next American Idol. There were no previews of what the format for the final show will be. It will definitely be an hour, since Fox will be debuting Glee on that same night (yay!).

The problem with the stage was fixed, but the towers never spun all night. Probably a good thing...

A record 64 million votes were phoned and texted in last night.

Performances included the Top 4 with Slash, Paula Abdul, No Doubt, and Daughtry. All were incredible!

Ryan built the Top Three one person at a time.

Kris is safe.

Adam is safe.

Then, it was between Danny and Allison.

The journey ended for


Allison Iraheta.

Next week will be "Hometown Heroes," with the Top 3 going home to a huge celebration. Then, the competition will expand to each contestant singing one song of their choice and one song of the judges' choice.

Allison was truly incredible, and in my opinion, she deserved to move forward for at least one more week. Regardless of her being voted off tonight, she will likely be signed by the end of the Idol Tour, and she will have a bright future in front of her.

The Nevada State Senate has passed a domestic partnership bill by a 12-9 margin--two shy of being veto-proof.
The bill is expected to do well in the Assembly (not sure if it will pass), but Governor Jim Gibbons (R) has promised a veto, saying "I just don't believe in it."
A quick check of his own biography reveals that his own experience with his opposite-sex marriage is not the shining example held up by his fellow conservatives, so it begs the question of exactly what model of marriage does he believe in?

Ryan opened the show by wishing everybody a happy Earth Day and announced that the finale will use green energy to power the Nokia Center for that night. (Note to the producers: how about every night????)

Paula choreographed the dance moves for the group number tonight. She may be a bit wacky on the program, but the woman is a tyrant in the dance studio. It's easy to see why her choreography won so many awards, and this may be her way of trying to get on So You Think You Can Dance if in fact her contract with American Idol is not renewed and Kara takes her place.

Paula introduced the group number, which was the Michael Jackson/The Jacksons hit song "Shake Your Body (Down To the Ground)." The choreography was the best ever for a group number, and even Danny "Can't Dance" Gokey was looking better than normal.

After the number, Paula was called up on the stage and presented with a surprise bouquet of flowers and a lot of applause from the audience. Ryan called for the commercial break.

After the break, Allison and Lil had not finished changing, and Ryan stalled for time by introducing the Ford commercial. This one was a little more interesting this week, but then again, the bar has been very low this season.

After the commercial rolled, Lil and Allison had joined the rest.

Ryan did a quick bit of banter, pointing out that Matt Giraud had taken the longest of all the guys to change, and then it was time to start reading the results.

Lil Rounds stood up and went through her recap.

Ryan then asked her to move to the stools, based on her vote total.

Ryan then joined her and announced that she was the first of the two people to be eliminated that night. This was unexpected and a bit awkward, in my opinion, but then again, I don't produce the show.

Lil gets her chance to sing for the last time on the stage and turns in a dynamite performance. Frankly, if she had been putting out peformances like that one all season, she might not have been eliminated. The judges all had positive final comments, and all of them said that this was "only the beginning." I have no doubt that Lil has potential to be signed, and that final performance may take her far. She just needs a good producer who can challenge her, but not break her down.

Ryan calls the commerical break.

In keeping with the disco theme of the night, three classic disco artists, Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC of KC and the Sunshine Band performed. Freda Payne's voice was way out of practice, and she practically talked through her song. Thelma Houston was better, but still showed signs that her voice had seen better days. KC was a bit disappointing as well. Overall, this was the most uncomfortable part of the show.

After these performances, Ryan begins to read the rest of the results.

Kris Allen said he understood Paula's "shopping in the women's section" comment. He is safe for another week.

Adam Lambert expressed concern that the arrangement of "If I Can't Have You" would not go over well. Apparently, it did, because he's safe once again.

Danny Gokey said he kept meditating on Simon's criticisms of his "clumsy" performances, and he was beginning to understand Simon's point of view. (Run, Danny, run!) Danny is safe.

Anoop watched his performance and felt he could have done better. He is in the Bottom Three.

Allison and Matt are both asked to stand up. One of them will be in the Bottom Three. Both had attracted lots of criticism for their song arrangements. Matt stated that he had done his arrangement, and he wanted to do something different since he had been given the Save last week. Allison also felt good about the changes she made to her arrangement. Matt is safe, and Allison rounds out the Bottom Three.

So, for the Top 7 Redux week, the Bottom Three are:

I was surprised by the presence of Matt, but Scott was not as much of a surprise. He's got to tighten up on his pitch control, or he won't last long.

So, after the nationwide vote and the judges' refusal to use their one save, the person leaving tonight is:

I started out a fan of Michael's, but he quickly began to get the "big head," and wouldn't listen to any of the critique. So, like another Idol finalist by the name of Josh Gracin, his arrogance was his ticket off the show. But, maybe like Josh, he'll find his way in Nashville. But, until then, America got it right.

Your two favorite Idol podcasters are back to tell you that when it comes to American Idol and Motown, our" Love Is Like a Heatwave."

The Top 10 paid tribute to the golden anniversary of Detroit's own Motown by singing the classics and working with Smokey Robinson.

Some performances were a "Ball of Confusion," and often left us asking "What's Going On?"

But, "Ooh, Baby, Baby," there were some performances that had us ready for "Dancing In the Streets."

Tom and I "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" you to listen to us as we critique the performances, then make our predictions for the Bottom Three and the next contestant who will go home.

After a night of outstanding performances, I said the results could be very close and practically unpredictable, and I was right. In fact, the results seemed to be based mostly on reputation and popularity than they were on actual talent.

My predictions for the bottom three were based on performance, and I picked Michael Sarver, Lil Rounds, and Megan Joy Corkrey. Tom hoped for Adam Lambert, agreed with Michael Sarver, thought Lil Rounds could be in trouble, and thought that Scott MacIntyre could possibly be in trouble.

Well, after 31 million votes (a lower total than last week, incidentally), the bottom three were:


Alison Iraheta


Michael Sarver


Alexis Grace

After performances by Brad Paisley, and a duet between Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood--Season 3 winner and newly-inducted member of the Grand Old Opry--Ryan announced that Alison would be sent back to safety.

Then, the big question: would either Alexis or Michael be worthy of using the one-time "Judges' Save?" Simon's answer was that one of them would be. Ryan then announced that Michael was safe, leaving Alexis at the mercy of the judges. Simon informed Alexis that she was the one who they would deem worthy of saving--but only if she gave them a good final performance.

Unfortunately, nerves got the better of her, and her performance was horrible. Simon then delivered the predictable news that her performance was "good, but not good enough." So, Alexis became the latest person to leave the show.

Frankly, I found the results mostly surprising. In my opinion, Alexis' performance was solid enough and good enough that she didn't deserve to be voted off. Alison's definitely was worthy of her being on the show for one more week. Michael deserved to go home, and he likely rode through on popularity.

Next week's performance show will move to Wednesday night, due to President Obama's speech. Naturally, that means that the Update episode will move to Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

Any American Idol Results Night has suspense and tension, but this year, the producers decided to rachet up things a bit and throw us all some curves. From the last-minute decision on Wildcard night to make the Top 12 into a Top 13, then the (predictable) decision to have a double elimination, to a biiiig change in the way that Results Nights would run, there was plenty of food for the American Idol fans' thoughts.

Well, the big surprise was about what I expected: the show has introduced a "Judges Save." Basically, the "Save" will work this way:

1. The judges get one chance to override a vote-off and save one contestant.
2. The decision to override the vote-off must be unanimous.
3. Using the "Save" will mean that the next week's show will be a double-elimination.
4. The "Save" will only be available until the Top 5.

According to Ryan's presentation, the "Judges Save" was done in response to that "shocker" vote-off that has happened nearly every season on American Idol. Past victims have included Michael Johns, Chris Daughtrey, Jennifer Hudson, and Tamyra Gray, most of whom were considered heavy contenders for the title, and all of whom it was felt were voted off way too soon. As controversial as this "Judges Save" may be, it may help stop some of what I have called the "stunt voting," in which the good contestants get voted off and a loser stays on.

And now, for the results. The Top 13 received a record 33 million votes from the fans seeking to keep their favorites on for another week. As you may recall, my predictions for the bottom four were:

Anoop Desai

Megan Joy Corkrey

Jasmine Murray

I also predicted that Anoop and Jasmine would be singing for the last time on the stage.

Well, after 33 million votes, here are the actual bottom four:

And the two contestants leaving the competition were:


Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nuñez.

The judges decided not to use the "Judges Save," so there is still plenty of time to see if that gets used.

Three out of four on the bottom four was not bad, and I got one correct on the vote-offs. I will say that Jorge was a surprise. I thought he had at least one more week, but obviously America thought differently.

I did see on the news that Fantasia Barrino has predicted Danny Gokey will be the winner this season, and it will remain to be seen whether or not this happens. Either way, this looks like an interesting season!

For the first time in the show's history, we were presented with a Top 13, and more twists are on the way.

Join Tom and me as we discuss the Top 13 contestants' performances and make our predictions for which two will be going home.

We also discuss what possible extra "twist" will be introduced during tomorrow night's results show.

I wanted to touch base with all of my listeners for a moment.
As many of you know, my mother-in-law has been dealing with a health challenge for a while now, and things just got worse.
I just learned that she is in ICU and all symptoms are pointing to her having had a stroke.
We know that she has had at least a TIA in the past, and now this.
I am asking for everybody to hold positive thoughts for her and all of us.

At this time, I do not know how this will affect the production schedule, and I believe that everybody will understand that family has to come first.

The American Idol Update is back, and better than ever!

Once again, Tom The Ramble Redhead joins me to dish on the performance episodes of American Idol.
For those who are new to this show, we discuss each contestant's performance(s), who we liked,
who we think will be on the bottom, and who will be going home on Results Night.

On this week's show, we saw Group 1 of the Top 36, featuring twelve contestants, three of whom will go forward into the Top 12.
The three will consist of the #1 male singer, the #1 female singer, and the #2 vote recipient.
Given this change in the Idol rules, we changed our approach to guess who the top three would be, and we take a guess at who might be a wildcard.

For all of our loyal fans, we also need to point out that the American Idol episodes will be shifted back by one day,
due to President Obama's State of the Union Address, so we will produce the show on Wednesday night next week.

Let me also say that Tom went above and beyond the call of duty and hung in there while I dealt with some major Skype and PrettyMay  problems.

By now everybody knows that Barack Hussein Obama has won the 2008 presidential election and will become the 44th President of the United States of America. I am feeling so many different feelings that it's hard to put them into words, but terms like "joy," "peace," "hope," and "complete thrill" come to mind.

I repeatedly got teary-eyed as President-elect Obama addressed a crowd of nearly a million at Grant Park in Chicago, particularly when I heard a President-elect mention the word "gay" in a victory speech for what I am very sure is the first time. I know these words were not just words, but true expressions of a man who understands that when one of us is diminished, we all are diminished.

My sincere admiration also goes out to Senator John McCain who fought a worthy battle, and in the end conceded defeat with grace, going as far as to stop the many "boos" that arose from his crowd of supporters. It is my hope that his words of unity and working together are also not mere words, but a sincere commitment to set aside the partisanship that has poisoned our democracy and stopped our country from moving forward.

As of the time of this writing, the Democratic party has also picked up an additional 12 seats in the House of Representatives and 5 in the Senate. This is further proof that Americans are ready for our country to take a much different direction than it currently has. As we know the final results of the five states that were still in doubt as of this posting (North Carolina, Missouri, Montana, Georgia, and Indiana), we will get a greater idea of what this means for the future of our country.

As I think about what has happened, I have a great sense of pride for my fellow citizens. People everywhere voted for the first time, and it looks like the voter participation rate will exceed the record set in 1960. In states where it was allowed, early voting proved a huge success in increasing the overall turnout, and may have taken some pressure off of precincts on election day. Whatever their political affiliation, people were inspired to participate in this election, and we are already a stronger nation for it.


With this success, however, comes the many responsibilities:

Despite the success of early voting, there were long lines, and there were reports of people who still had to walk away and lose their right to vote.

We are still in the midst of a financial crisis that just recently was officially named a "recession."

We have two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that we are losing, and we must bring a responsible end to these wars.

We need to rebuild the infrastructure of our own country to avoid any more disasters like the one in Minneapolis.

We must develop alternative sources of energy and break our dependence on all combustible energy sources (not just oil).

We must also work to revive the job market in this nation and put Americans back to work.

We must continue to work toward the American ideal that "all [people] are created equal," (Declaration of Independence) and we must work to "secure the blessings of liberty" (Preamble to the Constitution) for all people everywhere.

In short, as I have said before, our participation in democracy can not end on November 4, 2008. Democracy must become a verb, not a noun. If we continue with the same energy that led us to this incredibly unlikely turning point in our history, then we will truly be unlimited in what we can achieve for the next eight years, and beyond.

YES, WE DID, AND YES WE CAN!

If you have not already voted in early voting, get out there and vote on November 4.

And don't forget: democracy requires that we not go to sleep after November 4. If we want to see change, we have to make it happen. Nobody is going to do it for us.
