Apparently, Brad Pitt has decided to forgo marriage to Angelina Jolie, because they both want to see same-sex marriage legally recognized. While I appreciate any straight couple who supports same-sex marriage between consenting adults, this is not a couple I feel comfortable having in my corner.
Call me an ingrate, but Brad and Angelina are not exactly the type who will be able to make a convincing case to the "Family Values" crowd. Angelina has been married more than once, and Brad did not wait until he had finalized his divorce from Jennifer Aniston until he began dating Angelina. Two people with their record will be immediately dismissed by Dobson, Falwell, and company quicker than you can say "Send me all your money so I can fight the evil of poverty--my own." We can do bettter than these two advocating same-sex marriage.
For me, the most convincing opposite-sex couple was one I saw during a Pride parade in Nashville. They wore sandwich boards which said "Happily Married for 20 Years" on the front, and "And Gays Should Have the Same Right!". Admittedly, being married for twenty years is no guarantee the marriage will not fall apart tomorrow, but it is safe to say this couple could have at least some credibility with the Religious Right.
Brangelina, thanks, but no thanks for your support!
